Towering tidal waves, scarce food, and little wood for making fire, the harsh living conditions quickly force the two to cooperate or die. I enjoyed the story way more than the ending.

The end – well, I won’t spoil it for you, but it made me smile. I wanted to read it because I remember loving the movie. Nebula Award for Best Novella — You believe in the characters and the ever strengthening relationships. It is difficult to deal with how this happens on the scale of entire societies, though. One of those old ennemy scifi’s where it is all about the story and the ending is just something that is used in two pages to give you posture, regardless of how unlikely it is.

I was so happy when it was everything I remembered and more! I love every part of enmy book — my only reservation is that the hermaphroditic character is called “it”. The alien, being hermaphrodite and pregnant, gives birth and dies, leaving the unfortunate man to guess how to bring it up. It was well done. EDIT I had a silly idea.

The original ending could have worked had it been made 20 years or so before, but audiences don’t often like that style of ending when there isn’t a major real-world transparent metaphor involved.
Author Barry Longyear reported at a convention that the studio insisted on adding a subplot involving a mine, thinking the audience would not realize that the “Mine” in the title was a possessive as in “My Enemy” rather than an object.
The Tomorrow Testament is a loose sequel to the tale, reiterating its lessons in a competently extended form.
